Living on central Florida’s east coast puts residents in an enviable position of having a front row seat to some of the most beautiful landscape in Florida. Like many regions around the world, we’re facing a health crisis in our waterways. It’s imperative we take steps now to address the challenges facing the Indian River Lagoon and make a lasting impact for generations to come. I’m writing to request your support for Representative Randy Fine and Senator Debbie Mayfield’s effort to secure a state appropriation in the amount of $1,325,000 for the Brevard Zoo's Aquarium Project.

The health of our waterways is a huge factor to maintaining our quality of life, affecting the value of our homes, recreational opportunities, and attracting new residents and employers. Brevard Zoo is in a position to help us respond to these challenges with a multi-faceted research and conservation facility that can benefit any coastal community. With a legacy of successful stewardship as a community and conservation partner, giving more than $1 million a year to wildlife conservation, and realizing a $65 million economic impact to the region, Brevard Zoo has already been directly addressing challenges head on. And it all started twenty-five years ago when they brought together 16,000 residents and volunteers to literally build the Brevard Zoo by hand. Now, we are once again ready to come together and build another institution whose presence will save Florida’s natural resources and solve this most important need.

That institution is The Aquarium Project, and your support can make it a reality. I am an avid supporter because it will:

  • Establish a regional center for Indian River Lagoon restoration research that is urgently needed to deliver projects that address environmental concerns, catalyze citizen volunteer efforts and provide infrastructure to support conservation and research.
  • Support and complement the high-tech workforce and their families who move to the area not just for employment opportunities but for our rich coastal environment (alive with beaches, lagoons, rivers and estuaries) and access to affordable housing and top-rated schools.
  • Provide a unique educational and recreational opportunity not found anywhere along Florida’s I-95 corridor.
  • Provide a facility for the Sea Turtle Healing Center closer to where many injured turtles are rescued.
  • Expand and diversify the hospitality offerings and generates new employment opportunities to citizens in the region.

As a resident of this vibrant community, I thank you for your consideration and encourage you to join me to support these efforts and make this exciting project come to life.

Sincerely,
